It Takes Friends To Preserve History.
In great deeds, something abides. On great fields, something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear, but spirits linger, to consecrate the ground for the vision-place of souls.”
--Joshua Lawrence ChamberlainDedication of 20th Maine Monument
At Little Round Top, 1886
Walk the pastoral fields at Gettysburg, and you can sense the significance. Over 165,000 soldiers battled here over the course of three days in July 1863; 51,000 were killed, wounded or captured as they fought for their beliefs. History was made here at Gettysburg.
In 1989, concerned citizens joined together to assist the Gettysburg National Military Park in preserving and protecting this hallowed ground for generations to come. Friends of Gettysburg members continue to care for the battlefield by building and painting fences, restoring monuments, donating priceless land and artifacts, and raising money to support battlefield rehabilitation efforts.
